Terskler

"Greenland lies beyond some significant borders and is in many ways an outpost in the world. In the beginning here were two routes to Greenland. One crossed Asia, Alaska and Canada and resulted in wawes of cultures inhabiting the large island over the last 4000 years. The other way was through Europe, and it was the longer way in time. Even though it was effected with faster vessels. Western technology had to conquer the thresholds, and it was not quicker that the desires of the cultures form the east. In an open sense almost any culture in Greenland has been dependent on supplies from the world outside to be able to maintain life. The current flowing around the coast of Greenland was, and still is, bringing driftwood with it to the western shores of  Greenland. This driftwood was a key to the building typologies of the early greenlanders.  You might say that an opportunistic use of found materials was a base to a whole tradition of building. The settlers from Europe was just as much depending on import, and they practiced it in it’s real meaning. The deliveranse from Europe, meaning Norway at that time, and Denmark today, was put into system around year 1000. Import today is a basic necessity when it comes to the building industry in Greenland. In the Maniitsoq project I will see to the issues of using more locally produced material, but one must be aware of the implications this brings with it: Knowledge in extraction and adaptation of stone, earth or clay is a young branch and requires a new sort of craftmanship in Greenland.
